Many families are making decisions about their loved ones and learning as they go. This article aims to help you understand the different levels of support available and what options you have to assure that your loved one is kept safe and is well looked after.

Home care support options can be quite confusing. It seems that there are so many terms thrown around that some can just go right over your head. The good news is, you are not alone.

When confronted with life changes, expected or unexpected, there are levels of support to consider when exploring what is best for yourself or a loved one. These support levels vary greatly and may involve one or more of the following:

  • A brief hospital stay

  • Outpatient surgery

  • Rehab/Skilled Nursing facility

  • Physical/Occupational/Speech Therapy (Home Health)

  • Direct Home Care

  • Skilled Nursing services

  • Or a combination of all of the above

If you or a loved one is hospitalized, your healthcare team will discuss plans with you regarding post hospital treatments. This might involve a short stay at a Rehab or Skilled Nursing Facility or, if you are healthy enough and there is sufficient support in the home, you may be discharged directly home with accompanying physician orders for Home Health Services. Home Health Services may include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Direct Nursing Care. These services are paid for by your insurance provider and are generally short term (one to six months) depending on your need.

This may not be enough for you or your loved one’s peace of mind. If more support is desired beyond the therapies described above, many families engage Direct Home Care and/or Skilled Nursing Support through a private provider like Broad Street Home Care. This assures their loved one’s safety and wellbeing is looked after in a more personalized manner.
