PATIENT ADVOCACY
Family Training
When a loved one needs assistance on an ongoing basis, it can be challenging to deliver care to them in a way that is effective, supportive and provides comfort.
It may also be challenging for that loved one to communicate their needs to you. This can lead to frustration for all members of the household and create unwanted stress to an already stressful environment.
The Care Management team at Broad Street works very closely with each and every Care Professional on our staff to ensure that they understand how to best support our clients.
These same Care Managers are available to work with you and your family to provide the same level of training we deliver to our care team.
BROAD STREET BUILDS A NETWORK OF SUPPORT
How Family Training Works
As with all of our clients, the first step is to learn as much as possible about the person who is requesting support. Our Care Managers consult with you and your family to gain a thorough understanding of the need and to discuss support options. For example, if your loved needs assistance transferring out of bed, is medical equipment necessary or is this a task that can easily be done by a loved one in the home.
Once the needs have been identified and best methods of support are agreed upon, Broad Street’s Care Managers develop a plan to help all family members understand what is required and how to physically deliver the support. This training is done in person with real life demonstration of how to deliver the support.
Emotional Support is Equally Important
Needing help or assistance may cause a loved one to feel uncomfortable. It’s not always easy to ask for help. Broad Street’s Care Managers incorporate the emotional aspect of delivering and accepting support into their training. This helps each family member understand the importance of providing support and the emotional connection that is inherent in delivering care.
Supporting a loved one emotionally is just as important as the physical care that is being provided. Understanding this aspect of care is an important part of the training program. During the training, each family member will not only learn their physical responsibilities but have a chance to learn about and acknowledge the emotional benefit the are also providing.
